Beautifully situated in the small village of Blackfordby, the Black Lion is a traditional British pub.
From our vast selection of real ales to our warm and friendly atmosphere, we strive to create an environment that everyone can enjoy.
Blackfordby is a quaint and quirky village which lies on the very edge of the county. Located in the National Forest and surrounded by beautiful countryside, visiting us is a great opportunity to swap the car for your walking boots and check out the local scenery.
During the 19th and 20th Centuries, many Blackfordby men found employment in the coal mines of south Derbyshire and North West Leicestershire. Residents of surrounding villages such as Measham, Donisthorpe and Moira saw Blackfordby as a 'safe haven', because although the village suffered from the effects of the effulent from factories, there was little to no damage to the general landscape of the village.
Blackfordby has two places of worship: the Anglican Church of St. Margaret of Antioch, and the Methodist Chapel. Other local attractions include Calke Abbey - a baroque mansion based just a 20 minute drive away, Ashby Castle - the ruins of a Norman manor house, and Conkers in Overseal - a great family day out in the heart of the National Forest.
Here at The Black Lion, we love to keep things local, so a majority of our guest ales are brewed in surrounding areas. You can find drinks from the Blue Monkey Brewery, Burton Bridge Brewery, Derby Brewing Co., Thornbridge Brewery, Shardlow Brewery Company and Nene Valley Brewery - the list goes on...
